How to Identify Referring Domains Competitors Share in Fashion and Entertainment

For a fashion label launching a collection or an entertainment site covering a new release, visibility depends on more than social posts. Search engines also look at which websites link to a page. A useful way to uncover potential press and partnership opportunities is to identify referring domains competitors share: the sites that link to several brands or publishers in the same field. Those shared connections can reveal where your own work might find a relevant audience.

Backlink research is not about copying every link a rival has earned. A link from a relevant magazine, event listing or specialist blog may offer a genuine route to readers; a cluster of unrelated, low-quality links may offer little value. The goal is to understand why a link exists and whether you can create something that gives the publisher a reason to mention you too.

Start with a meaningful competitor set

Choose a few competitors that reach the audience you want, rather than simply selecting the biggest names in the industry. A small independent clothing brand might learn more from other labels at a similar stage than from a global fashion house with a large press team. An entertainment publication could compare itself with sites covering the same genres, artists or audience interests.

Include both direct competitors and adjacent organisations. For example, a vintage retailer might study fashion blogs, local market organisers and sustainability publications. A film news site could look at festival pages, fan communities and specialist reviewers. This wider set helps distinguish the websites that routinely cover your niche from those that link only for a one-off reason.

    Compare backlinks, not just rankings

Use a backlink analysis tool to collect the domains linking to each competitor. Then look for overlap: a magazine that links to three designers, a podcast directory featuring several entertainment shows, or a local guide that lists multiple venues. To get a more reliable picture, check more than one competitor and focus on domains with links to several of them.

A practical competitor backlink analysis guide can help structure the process, from finding relevant domains to assessing opportunities. Keep a simple worksheet with the domain, the pages it links to, the type of link, and a note on why it may have been placed. That context is more useful than a raw list of URLs.

Work out what earned the link

Open the linking page and examine the actual mention. Did the site link to a designer’s lookbook, quote an interview, include a product in a seasonal roundup, or list a venue as part of an event guide? The answer suggests what the publisher values. A link to a detailed trend report points to a different opportunity than a link created because a brand supplied images for an editorial feature.

Check whether the mention is current, relevant and accessible to readers. A competitor may be linked because of a dated event or a page that no longer exists. That does not automatically create an opportunity. It may, however, indicate that the publisher covers similar launches and could consider a timely, well-prepared contribution in the future.

    Turn patterns into useful ideas

Look for repeatable themes. If several fashion competitors appear in seasonal gift guides, prepare clear product information, strong photography and a concise description well before the relevant shopping period. If entertainment sites earn links through interviews, consider whether you have a distinctive artist, production story or knowledgeable spokesperson to offer. If local organisations link to multiple venues, a public event or community project might be a natural fit.

Make your pitch specific to the page and audience. Explain why the material is timely and what it adds, rather than sending a generic request for a backlink. A useful asset might be an original survey, a visual archive, a behind-the-scenes interview or an expert comment. Links are more likely to make sense when they help a publisher complete a story or give readers something they cannot get from a routine sales message.

    Build the capacity to act

Research only pays off when someone can produce the work behind an outreach idea. Smaller teams may need help with writing, design, video editing, photography or marketing. When commissioning a freelancer through Osdire, it helps to define the audience, deadline, format and deliverables before placing an order. These are practical freelance offer best practices: clear expectations make it easier for a freelancer to understand the brief and deliver work that fits the campaign.

Keep the work realistic. A short list of well-matched publishers and a strong, relevant asset are usually more useful than contacting hundreds of sites with the same message. Track responses and outcomes, but also note which ideas generated conversations or useful feedback. That record can improve the next campaign even when a particular pitch does not lead to a link.

    Judge opportunities by fit

Shared referring domains are clues, not a checklist. Before approaching a site, ask whether its readers would care about your subject, whether the link would make sense in context, and whether you can offer something genuinely useful. A thoughtful comparison can help fashion and entertainment businesses find realistic routes to discovery, while keeping their outreach focused on relationships and editorial value rather than link counts alone.
