While roulette is primarily a luck-based game, there are some strategies developed over time to get you the best odds at winning. One strategy gaining in popularity in recent years is the 666 betting strategy.
It is a fitting name for something frequently called the ‘devil’s wheel’ but it is actually named after the combined total of all the numbers on the table.
It is known as an aggressive strategy that has low risk, but is that accurate?
In this article, we cover the basics of the 666 betting strategy and its advantages and disadvantages.
Once you learn how to play roulette, you can start to implement different strategies like this one into your play style.
How It Works
In the most basic term, the 666 betting strategy has you place a total stake of $66 (another place where the name comes from) across every number on the table bar four.
This is supposed to give you an even spread which theoretically will give you a better chance of winning.
The first step to this bet is to place $36 on black or red to get a payout at 1 to 1. In our example we use red.
The next step is to place $4 split bets on twelve of the numbers on the board of the other color. So if you put a $36 bet on red then you would put a split bet on:
- 0 and 2
- 8 and 11
- 10 and 13
- 17 and 20
- 26 and 29
- 28 and 31
These bets will pay 17 to 1.
The final step is to bet $2 on 3 of the remaining numbers. In our example, our final numbers to choose from are 4, 6, 15, 22, 24, 33, and 35. The payout on these single hits would be 35 to 1.
In this scenario, you would either win an extra $6 or lose the full $66.
This strategy is supposed to be played with small winnings in mind, so doubling or tripling your bet is not a good idea. Many people fall into the temptation of raising their bet when they’re on a winning streak which is when they will end up losing more money.
House Advantage
Depending on the wheel you use, there are different house advantages.
- For the American wheel, the house advantage is 5.26%
- For the European wheel, the house advantage is 2.7%
- For the French wheel, the house advantage is 1.35%
Advantages
As with most roulette strategies, this one is used to spread the risk across the whole table. Statistically, there is only a 10% chance of a number being landed on that you haven’t placed a bet on.
Its goal is to achieve small but consistent profits which are generally seen as less dangerous than the strategies that aim to win big.
As a strategy, it is completely legal to perform in both online and physical casinos.
The biggest advantage of the 666 betting strategy is that it is fun to try. When playing roulette, there are moments when you want to change up your play style to keep the game interesting. In the end, roulette is meant to be entertaining and not about becoming a millionaire.
Disadvantages
Despite its large public following, the 666 betting strategy is statistically flawed and doesn’t work as well in practice as it does on paper.
It is presented as an almost beginner strategy, but the large bet on every spin will be off-putting to even the most veteran players.
Even though there is only a 10% chance of the ball landing on a number you’re not on when it does happen you lose all of your money. Since you only win 10% of it back with a successful win, that means you will need to have a hit 11 times in a row to turn a profit if you lost it all. And there is only a 9 in 10 chance of landing on a winning spot.
Even if the statistical improbability happens of every number on the wheel being landed on only once, you will still come away with a loss.
This strategy is the perfect example of the house always having the edge. It doesn’t matter how well you implement this strategy, the absolute best you can hope for is to break even or get a tiny profit. More often than not you will come away with less money than you went in with.
Final Thoughts
When it comes to roulette strategies, there are much better options to choose from such as the Martingale system, D’Alembert system, and the Fibonacci system.
However, if you want to try a new strategy that will allow you to play for a relatively long time with enough funds, then you can use the 666 betting strategy.
The main reason it isn’t banned in casinos is that they know it isn’t that effective and the temptation to double or triple your bets is too high.
No matter what roulette strategy you choose to follow, make sure you bet responsibly.
